they have several events around the bay area. i'll have more details coming up. thanks for joining us. i'm kristen sze. >> i'm eric thomas. >> we are talking about a memorial service for a murdered marin county sheriff's deputy. >> that is expected to bring hundreds if not thousands to san rafael. john alston has a preview. >> reporter: the sun is now up. doors will open here at 10:15. the event is open to the public. about 800 to 1200 people expected here. the actual service begins at 11:00 a.m. and event is expected to run until 4:00 in the afternoon. the mourners will be gathering here will be paying their respected to jim mathison a sheriffs' deputy that works at the civic center for the past nine years. he was killed about a week and a half ago near petaluma. he had gone to a friend's houses

ho whose daughter was being harassed by an ex-boyfriend with a history of violence. that ex-boyfriend showed up and then shot the deputy who was off duty and unarmed at the time. when he tried to grab his ex-girlfriend's mother. a brother shot the suspect to death which has been calling a justifiable homicide but today is all about deputy mathison. one of the persons that worked for a long time in construction. decided to change careers and pursue his passion in law enforcement. he leaves behind a wife and two children two boys one 18 and one 21 years old. one of those sons will be speaking to the event. there will be other speakers from close friends. there will be a reception and an

opportunity afterwards for friends and relatives to sign his casket here. federal and state officials are working on what could be the largest marijuana eradication effort in california history. our media partner california watch was allowed to shoot this video from one of the raids being conducted in the mendocino national forest. so far they have removed 373,000 pot plants and arrested 88 people. tonight at 6:00 we'll bring you the full california watch investigation into the people behind these illegal pot farms and the influence mexico is having on the marijuana production here. police have found one marijuana cultivation site near the wood land area where a park police officer was shot at earlier this week. he was on routine patrol south

of moraga when gunmen opened fire on him with assault rifles. the officer shot back. he was rescued by an armored vehicle. aerial surveillance uncovered one active grow site. a vigil is expected tonight at the site where a person was shot and killed while feeding the homeless in east oakland. known as brother john was shot in the head when someone in a car opened fire on him his wife and two young daughters. his pregnant wife and one daughter were also wounded. there is a small memorial on 47th avenue where the shooting took place. same area where the neighborhood will hold tonight's vigil. there is a $25,000 reward for information leading to a suspect. public records show alameda city officials were warned a program was necessary for public safety more than two years before a man drowned as

firefighters watched on memorial day. our media partner oakland tribune the noticed was filed by firefighters union in february 2009. he warned that water rescues happen several times a year and the decision to cut the rescue program violated the firefighters' contract because it changed working conditions. those records were released as alameda investigates the drowning death of raymond zach on memorial day. firefighters would not go into the water to help saying they were not certified to do so. >> house republicans are meeting in hopes to figure out what needs to be change after a shocker yesterday. just as they appeared yesterday on john boehner's legislation to avoid a default next week the speaker announced there would be no vote. amy hollyfield is live in the newsroom. >> reporter: republicans have to get their party in order.

while they are fighting the clock keeps ticking here is how much time they have left until the government defaults. the government will default on tuesday. he surprised everyone when he said there won't be a vote. he said how confident that he had enough votes to get the bill passed which would cut $900 billion from the deficit and extend the debt ceiling until next spring. tea party members said they would not vote to raise the debt ceiling. even if they get out passed the government would have to do it in the future. it can't be an option because it will not pass the senate. it's dead on arrival. >> reporter: it would shift to senate leaders. republicans need to get their business done.

and senate leaders where the majority would support would be the whole other issue. so lawmakers have a long way to go and not much time left. but unprecedented default will happen on tuesday. hear is some perspective on how dire the u.s. debt crisis is becoming. apple has more cash than the federal government. this morning the treasury department says it has $73 billion in cash on hand. apple ed it was sitting on a cash reserve of $76 billion. >> that puts things in perspective. that is pretty scary. >> it is absolutely scary. >> we have numbers that are not too scary for us warm weather. >> we have a high pressure and marine layer diluting. >> there is 1,000 to 1500 foot

mathison a deputy in marin county. he was here for nine years he was killed a week and a half ago near petaluma. he was gone to friend's house. the boyfriend of the daughter showed up and shot the deputy who was off duty and unarmed at the time. when he tried to grab the ex-girlfriend's mother a brother shot halloran to death. that has been ruled as justifiable homicide. nine years ago mathison decided to become a sheriffs deputy. he worked at civic center and jail. he leaves a wife and two sons. one of those sons will be speek speaking today. the sheriff will also talk and california flags will be presented to officer mathison's two sons. there will be a reception after
